2008 Honoree

Tom Harrington '43S. Thomas F. Harrington, Jr. '43

After graduating from The Prep, Tom attended Villanova University and then enlisted in the Navy for two years. After his discharge, he entered the insurance business and was a broker before becoming co-owner of an insurance agency in Upper Darby until his retirement in 1991.

He and his wife Peg celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 1 of this year. They had ten children: Marti, Thomas, Hugh, Richard, Tim, Gregory, Beau, Andrew, David and Stephen.

In the 1940s, Tom was one of the very first participants in the fledgling Alumni Board of Governors, founded by Fr. Charles Schnorr, S.J. He has ably represented his graduating class as its sole representative for over sixty years.

Although macular degeneration continues to erode at Tom's sight, he refuses to yield to the disease. In fact, for the past 10 years he has been involved with the Middle Atlantic Blind Golf Association and serves as its vice president. Today, this organization, which was founded to enhance the life of the blind, has 30 members, half of whom are totally blind.

Thanks to his generous service to The Prep, Tom has been the recipient of two of his alma mater's highest awards: The Rev. Charles A. Schnorr, S.J. Service Award (1984) and Alumnus of the Year Award (2003) which he shared jointly with Rev. John McGinty, S.J. '45.
